Infant Baptism
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 28:19
Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation and the foundation of the Christian life. Through Baptism, children are freed from original sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the family of the Church.
Eligibility
Infant Baptism is celebrated for children from birth up to their seventh birthday. Children who are seven years of age or older will follow a different process of faith formation in preparation for baptism.
Parents' Preparation
We are delighted to accompany you as you prepare for your child's Baptism and welcome your family into this beautiful celebration of faith.
To help you through the process, we ask that parents:
- Contact the parish office to begin the Baptism preparation process. Families who are registered at St. James Catholic Parish, as well as those who are new to our community, are encouraged to reach out so that we may assist you.
- Participate in a Baptism Preparation Session, which offers an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the sacrament and the important role parents play as the first teachers of the faith.
- Provide a copy of your child's official birth certificate for our sacramental records.
We look forward to celebrating this special occasion with you and supporting your family as you nurture your child's relationship with Christ and His Church.
Choosing Godparents
Godparents play a special role in the life of a child who is being baptized. Along with the parents, they are called to encourage and support the child's growth in the Catholic faith through their example, prayers, and active participation in the life of the Church.
The Church asks that godparents:
- Be at least 16 years of age.
- Be Catholics who have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
- Be actively practicing the Catholic faith and strive to live in a manner consistent with the teachings of the Church.
- If married, be in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church.
- Obtain a Letter of Eligibility from the pastor of the parish where they are registered and regularly participate in Mass.
A baptized Christian from another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness, together with one Catholic godparent, provided that he or she has been validly baptized.
If you have questions about selecting godparents or determining eligibility, please contact the parish office. We would be happy to assist you as you choose those who will accompany your child on this lifelong journey of faith.
