First Holy Communion

The celebration of First Holy Communion is a joyful milestone in a child’s journey of faith. In this sacrament, children receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ for the first time and are more fully united to Him and His Church.

At St. James Catholic Parish, we are honored to walk with families as children prepare for this sacred moment.

Who May Participate

Children typically prepare for First Holy Communion in second grade (approximately 7–8 years old) or higher, or after completing the required period of sacramental preparation.

Preparation Requirements

We warmly welcome families as they prepare their children for this important step in their faith journey. To ensure that children are properly prepared to receive the Eucharist, the following are required:

  • Parish Registration: Families should be registered members of St. James Catholic Parish. New families are warmly welcomed and encouraged to register.
  • Faith Formation: Children must be enrolled in an approved religious education program or Catholic school and participate regularly in their faith formation classes.
  • Sacramental Preparation: Children are required to complete a dedicated First Holy Communion preparation program, which includes instruction in the meaning of the Eucharist, prayer, and participation in the life of the Church.
  • First Reconciliation: Children must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) prior to First Holy Communion.
  • Mass Attendance: Regular participation at Sunday Mass is expected as part of living and growing in the Catholic faith.

Parent Involvement

Parents are the first teachers of the faith. We strongly encourage and invite parents to participate in meetings, workshops, and family activities that support their child’s preparation for the Eucharist.

We joyfully look forward to walking with your family as your child prepares to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.
